142. Mr. Robert Maxwell (Buckingham): To ask the Secretary of State for Commonwealth Affairs, what steps he is taking to improve commercial information in Rong King in support of the United Kingdom export drive; and whether he will make a statement.

DRAFT REP LY

The staff of the U.K. Trade Commissioner in Hong Kong is being strengthened in order that additional work on commercial publicity may be undertaken.

ROTES FOR SUPPLEMENTARIES

1. An officer will be recruited to handle

commercial publicity under the direction of

the Assistant Trade Commissioner who has

information experience.

2. He will supervise the production of a

Trade Promotion Magazine and liaise with the

Chinese Press and Television Stations.

3. We consider that we can achieve results

more quickly by recruiting a local man than

by sending someone new out from the U.K.

4. We will consider whether any further

expansion of Commercial Information work is

necessary after we have had rome experience

of the working of the new arrangement.

5. The previous arrangement was that all

publicity for the U.K. wae left to the Hong

Kong Government Information Services.
