As anticipated, the study of the Thoughts of MAO Tse- tung has been further intensified in all left-wing circles, and the printing of copies of "Quotations from Chairman MAO" is to be speeded up, special groups having been formed within printing companies for this purpose. Although the target for the sales of this booklet in Hong Kong is 200,000, some le ding left-wing personalities consider that this is too low and should be raised to 600,000. 150,000 of the English version of the "Quotations" are being produced in the Colony, mainly for export to Forth America and Europe and with staffs of printing companies working overtime, are expected to be available at the beginning of May.

Plans to expand communist controlled schools continue. and the Sun Kiu Middle School has decided to open a fund raising campaign to enable a Primary section to be opened in Wanchai. The campaign by the Heung To Middle School to raise HK$500,000 for a new branch (L. I.C, Internal Intelligence Report for March, 1967 paragraph 6 refers) has already raised over $100,000. 7 April the Chung Hwa Middle School held a formal foundation stone laying ceremony for a new school to replace the present hired premises. It was announced that HK$600,000 had been raised for the project, now due to be completed in August, although more was still needed.

During the first half of March the left-wing press continued its attacks on Government, culminating in the middle of the month with articles appearing in both the two leading left- wing dailies listing a number of incidents dating from the riots in 1956 to the flying of the K.. T. flag during the recent Hong Kong Golf Championship. These, it was alleged, proved that Government and H. E. the Governor in particular are conniving with the "Chiang clique" who are intensifying their activities in the Colony. An editorial in the Afternoon News alleged that the C.P. G. has, since coming into power, been keeping a record of the deeds of the Hong Kong Government and that "one day the account will be settled". The presence of U.S. ships in the harbour, particularly those which have been reported as taking part in the bombardment of North Vietnam, and the use of Kai Tak airfield by U.S. military planes, were again the subject of attack on Government. Although this scries of anti-Government articles had abated somewhat by the end of the month, criticism of "the plot to turn Hong Kong into a country" continued. An indication of how sensitive the left-wing is on this subject is the prominence given in the left-wing press to a series of letters criticising a debate held on 17 March between pupils of the Government Queen's College and the Catholic Maryknoll Girls' School at which the subject was "Is the independence of Hong Kong desirable?"

The 7th April saw the anniversary of the death of CHENG Yun Cheong (6774/3387/4382), the rioter shot dead by police during the Kowloon riots (L. I. C. Monthly Intelligence Report for April, 1966 paragraph 8 refers). In commemoration of this event SO

Sau Chung (5685/1343/1813), a friend of LO Kei (4151/7784) who committed suicide on 23 March (L. I.C. Internal Intelligence Report for March 1967, paragraph 9 refers), and three other youths carrying placards, some in memory of CHENG and others protesting against the war in Vietnam and the use of Hong Kong as a U.S. base, paraded down the middle of main thoroughfares in Kowloon on the way to the spot where CHENG was killed, with the intention of holding a form of a memorial service. Considerable public attention was attracted to the group, and despite being warned by the police, they continued their march. SO and one other youth were arrested, charged with obstruction and holding a procession
