Carter wrote to you on 16 July about the raising of charges by H.M. Government against the Hong Kong Government in respect of the costs of various facilities, personnel etc., which were provided by the Services in connexion with last year's disturbances in the Colony.
In paragraph 3 of the above letter it was mentioned that we did not know what the Air Department's bill was likely to be, although we gave a tentative figure of £25,000. We have now been told by the Ministry of Defence that "the total known cost to the 31st May 1968 for the Air Force Department's expenditure on the Hong Kong i/s operation is £37,500. breakdown of the total is as follows:-
The
July 1967
November 1967
4 Britannia flights
£10,700
4 British Eagle Charter Flights
£10,800
February 1968
Hercules' Flights
£16,100"
Carter is away on leave at the moment and I am accordingly letting you have the above information as soon as possible for the purposes of the discussions referred to in paragraph 4 of his letter.
