THE PROVISION OF A HUNTER UNIT

IN HONG KONG

ANNEX A TO

CINCFE 3031/6130/12 Dated 24th September 1968

INTRODUCTION

1. The Chiefs of Staff Committee approved a report (1) which examined the feasibility of providing Hong Kong with a small Hunter force, and which made the following principal proposals:

Aircraft UE of four F/GA 9 and one T7.

A further three F/GA 9 stored in the Colony against wastage and

repair.

Unit established in Hong Kong after the withdrawal of No 20 Squadron from Singapore in March 1970.

¿. Provision at Hong Kong of an extensive range of Hunter aircraft

spares.

Close identification of the Hunter unit with the Colony.

f. An RAF element including six Hunter pilots and some ground staff.

g.

Support to be provided by the Hong Kong Auxiliary Air Force and/or the Hong Kong Aircraft Engineering Company.

h. Hunters could be provided at Hong Kong until about 1975.

In approving the report, the Chiefs of Staff Committee instructed the Commander-in-Chief, Far East to carry out a detailed examination of the proposal (2). This paper presents the required study.

Assumptions

3. For the purposes of this paper, it is assumed that:

The primary role will be day air defence, and the secondary role will be ground attack (including reconnaissance).

Operations involving the Hunters will be in the ratio 60% air defence, and 40% ground attack/reconnaissance.

Hunters will not deploy to other bases from Kai Tak.

GCI facilities will be provided by No 117 SU.

e.

The range at Port Shelter will continue to be available for weapons training.
