I agree, but think that the

passage which I have enclosed

in square brackets might, with

advantage, we omitted.

Mr. Mason

While I agree that the passage in the minutes at

No. 138 recording the Prime Minister's summing up could be interpreted in the way MOD (Air) apparently

intend to do so, that would not in my opinion be the

natural meaning to attach to these minutes. I would

argue stoutly that the natural meaning is that

Ministers agreed that we must station Hunter aircraft in the Colony; and that the only aspect of this proposition which is now to be given further examination is the possibility that these aircraft might be manned

and serviced from local resources. This, as I say, is

quite definitely to my mind the natural meaning; and I suggest that in any further contact with the MOD (Air) we must stoutly maintain that this is the interpretation to be put on the minutes.

2.

I agreed with you that the last bit of the draft

should be amended. Please see the way I have reworded

it.

You will see that I have committed you to getting the latest state of play on this particular proposition

during your forthcoming visit to the Colony: but I imagine you would have been doing this any way!
