(b) as you know we are hoping that exit visas
will very shortly be issued for a number of
our Mission staff in Peking. We should not want
any announcement to be made in the immediate
future which the Peking Government could use
as an excuse for failing to issue visas. (c) If the arrival of in Hong Kong of 2 Para
leads to questions we suggest that they be
answered by saying that the unit has arrived as temporary replacement for 2/6 Gurkas.
3. We are of course aware that the Vice Chief
of the General Staff is reportedas having said
publicly during his recent visit to Hong Kong
that the increase in the size of the Army
garrison is likely to be of the order of one
batallion. If therefore it is simply a question
of confirming, in reply to enquiries, what
the VCGS said we should have no objection.
