(b) as you know we are hoping that exit visas

will very shortly be issued for a number of

our Mission staff in Peking. We should not want

any announcement to be made in the immediate

future which the Peking Government could use

as an excuse for failing to issue visas. (c) If the arrival of in Hong Kong of 2 Para

leads to questions we suggest that they be

answered by saying that the unit has arrived as temporary replacement for 2/6 Gurkas.

3. We are of course aware that the Vice Chief

of the General Staff is reportedas having said

publicly during his recent visit to Hong Kong

that the increase in the size of the Army

garrison is likely to be of the order of one

batallion. If therefore it is simply a question

of confirming, in reply to enquiries, what

the VCGS said we should have no objection.
