ANNEX A to DP 9/67(C)

(Preliminary Draft) (Concluded)

from the United Kingdom within 72 hours, including 24

hours warning time.

a.

The pre-stocking of unit equipment in Hong Kong to

the appropriate scales is conditional for the rapid

reinforcement of the colony from the United Kingdom.

Furthermore, the possible requirement for reinforcing

battalions to undertake operations on the border will

necessitate an increase in the War Maintenance Reserve

backing.

47. We also conclude that there is a requirement for a naval

presence of two frigates and five MCM vessels, together with

appropriate support facilities.

48. We finally conclude that there will be a continuing need

for the present Royal Air Force units in Hong Kong, including

the helicopters. After the withdrawal of our forces from

Malaysia and Singapore, there will be a requirement to provide

an operational air presence in the colony either through

rotation of Enits from the European Theatre, or by the presence

of a permanent fighter force, augmented periodically by training

detachments from the European Theatre. The final decision

on an operational air presence must await the results of a study

now being made by the Air Force Department.
