ANNEX A to DP Note 27/67(A) (Flimsy Draft)

IMPLICATIONS ON ARMY FORCE IEVEIS. UNITED

KINGDOM ARMS PLOT AND UNITED KINGDOM

ACCOMMODATION REQUIREMENTS

SEACOS 153 recommends that:

a.

From 1970 onwards, the Hong Kong Garrison is

increased by one battalion on an unaccompanied basis,

rotated every six to nine months from the United Kingdom.

b.

By the mid-Seventies, when all Gurkhas will have

been replaced by equivalent British units, the whole

of the Hong Kong Garrison (increased to 7 2/3 major units)

is on an unaccompanied basis, less one battalion and

static

units/headquarters on the Island, which would

continue to be accompanied:

Unaccompanied

Accompanied

One armoured car squadron

One infantry battalion

One light regiment

2.

One field squadron

Five infantry battalions

Furthermore, it is implied that the unaccompanied basis

should be implemented for unit reliefs arriving in Hong Kong from

now onwards.

3.

The Commander-in-Chief's recommendations have implications

on future force levels, the arms plot and the United Kingdom

accommodation plot. These implications are examined below.

Implications on Force Levels.

4. The planned world-wide force levels from 1971 onwards are geared to provide an all British garrison in Hong Kong by 1975 consisting of the following units on a fully accompanied basis:

One armoured car squadron

One light regiment

One field squadron

Five infantry battalions

TOTAL 6 2/3
