Mr. Carter
c.c. Mr. Moreton
Mr. Walsh Atkins General McNeill
Far East Defence
We discussed last week liaison between the D.T.D. and Mr. Moreton's Division on Far East defence. Since then there has been an exchange of minutes between Mr. Trafford-Smith and Mr. Moreton.
Mr. Trafford-Smith has asked that he, Mr. Hall, lir. Stacpoole and Mr. Fairclough should be kept informed.
2. Subject to your agreement, and bearing in mind that we frequently receive from the Cabinet Office only one copy (for security reasons) of relevant papers, I would like to confirm that I will minute direct to you on all matters concerning D.T.D. interests in Far East defence and rely on you to consult or inform others in your Division. I think this is the easiest way of doing it, bearing in mind that your Department probably has the prime interest in your Division in these matters.
3. On this side of the house I will rely on General McNeill, consulting Mr. Walsh Atkins as
necessary, to let us have views on Commonwealth defence requirements and interests in the Indian Ocean including East Africa, insomuch as this area is dependent theoretically and practically on assistance from the Singapore base.
