Proposal for a Polytechnic in Hong Kong
While in Hong Kong I spent an evening with
Mr. Michael Herries of Jardine, Matheson and Co. Ltd.,
who has recently been appointed to the Legislative
Council and who is Chairman of University Grants
Committee of Hong Kong.
2*
We discussed, amongst other things, the
proposal for setting up a Polytechnic in Hong Kong
which, I understand, Sir David Trench mentioned
while he was in London this spring. Mr. Herries'
idea and I have no doubt it is shared by others
in Hong Kong - was that H.M.G. might make a
contribution to the cost of the Polytechnic,
as a
gesture of British confidence in Hong Kong and a
sign of British interest and support.
3. No doubt this suggestion is already under
consideration. Mr. Herries will be attending a
meeting of the U.K. University Grants Committee on
Wednesday, 7 August and would like to call at the
Commonwealth Office beforehand to enquire whether
H. M. G. see any prospect of making a contribution.
4. I should be grateful if you would let me know
how matters stand on this question. I attach a
letter which Mr. Herries sent me, together with a
copy of the brief prepared for the Governor in
March.
