A Commerce and Industry Department spokesman said today there is no(repeat no) reason to worry about a shortage of rice in Hong Kong.

He was commenting on report that Thai Government may decide to cut down rice export this year. He said that in addition to ninety- thousand seven hundred tons of rice which was the stock available at end of August under the third quarter import quota, importers have imported in advance of their fourth quarter quota some thirteen- thousand eight hundred tons of rice. So at present actual stocks in importers hands are over one hundred thousand tons.

In addition he added importers have recently contracted for over fifteen thousand tons of rice from United States and South America part of which is already on its way to Hong Kong. Another four thousand tons of rice will shortly be arriving from Thailand and Cambodia.
