Although only
out of total exports valued at $337.9 million. about 23% of total exports go to the U.K., the absolute value is substantial and the industry considers that the U.K.'s imposition of the C. E. T. (24% a.v., to be reduced to 16% as a result of the Kennedy Round) would affect Hong Kong's performance in the U.K. market to some degree mainly because of competition from West Germany, Italy and Japan. On the other hand, Hong Kong's exports seem to be able to surmount the high tariff barriers in the U.S.A., Canada, and Australia and the effects of the loss of preference in the U.K. should not be too serious.

Exports do not at present appear to have much difficulty in surmounting the 35% a.v. tariff barrier in the U.S.A. or the 21% - 24% a.v. tariff barrier in Italy. There may, however, be some short term effects on trade with the U.K. if the 24% C.E.T. for this item were introduced there although the tariff will ultimately be reduced to 16% as a result of the Kennedy Round.
