CONFIDENTIAL

BRIEF NO. G.1

EUROPEAN ECONOMIC COMMUNITY

PART I

Talking points for use with Ministers and Officials

AUSTRALIA

I know that you have been making an effort to diversify

your trade and it looks as though Japan and the United States

will be replacing Britain this year as your main trading

partners. I should be interested to hear your views on this

development in the context of possible British membership of

the Community.

2.

If asked about sugar in which Queensland is particularly interested We are very conscious of this problem. Australian

and other Commonwealth sugar producers have for many years enjoyed the benefits of the Commonwealth Sugar Agreement which

has given them assured access to the British market at a price

well above world levels. The Six, on the other hand, are net

exporters of sugar. We should need, in the event of any

negotiation, to consult the Commonwealth Governments concerned.
