COFT FOR REGISTRATION
Following telegram of 12 June from The Hague to
Foreign Office No. 250 addressed to Hong Kong No.1 repeated for information to Brussels, UKMIS Geneva and Board of Trade.
(28) +(30)
Begins.
Following from Martin (at The Hague).
My telegram No.11 and your telegram No.M.377.
De Waard has informed me today that he would be prepared to visit Hong Kong if we "insisted". I queried the interpretation of this word and De Waard referred to his commitments in The Hague but in the result he undertook to come to Hong Kong in the first week of July (beginning 3 July). He is investigating flight reservations and will give me a firm date.
2. Last week De Theulegoet had said that he could not visit Hong Kong but today De Waard asked him to reconsider the position. I should seek a firm intention from him tomorrow. If he does not come De Waard would be assisted by the Belgian Consul-General in Hong Kong.
3. De Waard would come equipped with relevant statistical information and would also be ready to discuss the shirt arrangements for the next year commencing 1 October.
40 Please cable Brussels urgently if date of De Waard's visit is acceptable.
Ends.
