A group of female farmers from Chinese territory complained to Police at Lowu Railway Station early this Wednesday afternoon that they had been subjected to tear gas while farming their fields at Nam Hang on Hong Kong side of the border.
They alleged incident occurred at about eleven o'clock today. At this time a party from Police Training Contingent at Fanling were carrying out routine range practice on training range at San Uk Leng using gas pistols.
Police are now investigating possibility that a whiff of gas from the range was carried on the wind to the fields at Nam Hang, some one thousand yards distance.
The farmers were informed the matter was being investigated but they remained in vicinity of Lowu Police Post until well into the afternoon. At one stage stones were thrown at Police Post and some of the people made an unsuccessful attempt to force their way through a gate into the grounds of the post. Subsequently they withdrew and a loudspeaker announcement was made across the border by Hong Kong Authorities re-affirming their complaint would be fully investigated.
Ends.
