5. Chinese Government had already noted British protest about the police inspector. The police inspector was now being examined by the border authorities. The whole question could be discussed at talks between representatives sent by British authorities and border officials from border defence check post at Shum-Chun.

In his interview with Shen Ping on 15 October de la Mare adopted an unreasonable and arrogant attitude. On 21 [sic] October he used vile and base language against Shen Ping. The Chinese Government lodged strongest protest. The British Government must assume responsibility for these vile words which disrupt normal diplomatic intercourse.
