Hong Kong telegram No. 1765 to Commonwealth Office

-2-

7.

8.

To sum up, for what we have agreed to:-

(a) We can hope to get our two constables back;

(b) We have made the Chinese back down on one or two points

(although not on as many as we have conceded);

(c)

We have made our views on border obstacles and the need for orderly behaviour clear;

(d) We have at least achieved some form of dialogue,

and have gained experience in dealings of this kind. But again, the proof of this pudding is still going to be in the eating.

Please pass to Peking as you think fit.

F.0. please pass Routine to Washington as my telegram 393.

Sir D. Trench

[Repeated as requested]
