Addressed Commonwealth Office telegram No. 1502 of 7 October.
Repeated for information to POLAD Singapore.
サ
On the morning of 7 October an off duty police constable was walking along the pier at San Lau Street, Sha Tau Kok. He was jumped on by a number of villagers and despite his resistance was pulled across on to Chinese territory. There he was surrounded by more villagers and apparently beaten up. A vehicle then arrived and he was driven away. The Military Commander in Sha Tau Kok has made two broadcasts asking the local People's Liberation Army Commander for the return of the abducted man. The Chinese eventually started broadcasting music to drown our transmissions.
2. At about the same time police at Lo Wu saw that two KMT flags had been erected on our side within 100 yards of the bridge. They were removed within ten minutes but not before they had been seen from C.T. Shortly after, a representative of China Travel Service came across and lodged a protest at this "serious provocation". An investigation is being made to discover how these flags were put up in the closed area.
3.
There is no reason to connect these two incidents. Nevertheless they demonstrate the ease with which tension can still be recreated in the frontier area.
