On the following day, in

accordance with our usual practice, another attempt was made to repatriate the group. The frontier guards again help up inward traffic for about 15 minutes to exclude possible witnesses, but only one member of the party returned voluntarily and was accepted. The remainder have since been released in Hong Kong.

4. Though there have been no further developments during the past week, this could perhaps be a prelude to Chinese campaign to Hong Kong(on lines similar to those adopted in Macao) for the return of illegal immigrants and perhaps also of K.M.T. supporters. It may be significant that the left-wing press on 27th February exploited a trivial incident involving a fight in the Nam Fung textile factory between a left-wing and two right-wing workers to suggest that "the British police authorities" in Hong Kong were conniving with and protecting "elements of the U.S. -Chiang clique" in committing "repeated atrocities" (e.g. the illegal storage of arms and ammunition).
