My telegram No. 905.
Incidents at Sha Tau Kok.
H4D/17
There has been further trouble at Sha Tau Kok this morning. Details are not yet clear but preliminary reports suggest that at about 11.00 hours a crowd
estimated at 300 crossed the frontier and attacked the police post with sticks and stones. The police used tear gas and baton shells in reply.
2.
A light machine gun then opened fire on the police post apparently from the Chinese side of the frontier. Some reports suggest that it was manned by civilians. There were a number of casualties in the police post and it is thought that three policemen have been killed and seven wounded. Present information is that firing continues and that a machine-gun has been brought into British territory 500 yards inside the frontier near Tam Shui Hang.
3.
On the basis of this information I hope you will instruct Peking to lodge at once a strong protest.

With my approval Commander British Forces is deploying a company to deal with the machine-gun in British territory. Orders are that they should so far as possible avoid firing into Chinese territory.
