Sha Tau Kok.

The pro-communist Hong Kong Evening News in this evening's edition 8 July quoted Government Information Services as saying that this morning "300 peoples Militia crossed the border at Sha Tau Kok" and demonstrated outside the police station. The militia threw stones at the station and policemen inside fired at them. "Several minutes later a party of police was attacked. The militia fired at the police and after a series of shots 3 policemen were killed by militia".

2.

This is a fairly accurate rendering of the G.I.S. report except for the reference to the militia which was not mentioned by Government Information Services. The Evening News said nothing to suggest that any of the report is untrue.

(Passed as requested with advance copies to Foreign Office (F.E. Dept.), Commonwealth Secretary's Private Office

and D.1.0., Cabinet Office.)
