Hong Kong//

Mr. Gaminara first

Lieutenant-Commander Maydon M.P. has written to the Prime Minister passing on, and strongly supporting, the suggestion of the son of a constituen that the Hong Kong Police should be granted the title "Royal"

as a tribute to their devotion to duty. The constituent's son has apparently lived and worked in Hong Kong.

2. You will recollect that we discussed

the same idea when you were here in May

and we decided that the idea should not be

pursued. I wonder if you have given any further thought to this and are still of the

same opinion? We reached our decision, if I remember correctly, mainly on the basis of the possible repercussions on our relations with China and I am not suggesting that these considerations do not still

apply or that we should change our minds.

The problem is simply that it is not going to be easy to put these considerations to Lieutenant-Commander Lynch and I should be grateful for any thoughts you might have on how the Prime Minister could best reply.
