During your visit here in May one of the matters that we discussed with you, briefly and informally, was the suggestion that the Hong Kong Police Force should be granted the prefix of "Royal". (It was, I recall, your own suggestion in origin,
The conclusion made during your visit here on leave last year). reached was, I believe, that the idea should not be pursued; but we kept no record of the matter and I cannot remember the precise grounds on which we reached our decision.
The reason why I now mention the matter is that the Prime Minister has received a letter from Lieutenant-Commander S. L. C. Maydon, M.P., in which the latter has put forward the same suggestion. The idea was apparently put to him by the son of one of his constituents who has lived for some years in Hong Kong. He thought it would be a fitting tribute to the devotion to duty of the police force.
Before making any recommendations to the Prime Minister's Office as to what might be said to Maydon, we thought it advisable to consult you and we should accordingly be grateful for your views as to the reply which the Prime Minister should be recommended to send.
His Excellency
Sir David Trench, KCMG., MC.,
Government House,
Victoria,
Hong Kong.
