My telegram No. 681.
Macao Consulate.
Following from Political Adviser.
Ions telephoned on his return today to say that
the demonstrations resumed this morning but took a different turn. He was forced to receive protests at the main gate of the Consulate. Attempts were made to oblige him to stand in a circle which had been painted on the road and to say such things as "all British are filthy imperialists", "Hong Kong is Chinese territory", "Macao is not Portuguese territory". He stood in the sun from 9 to 12 and again from 2 p.m. until 7.
2.
He has now telephoned to say that he does not think he can put up with another day of this. I have discussed with Bolland and we think that he cannot reasonably be expected to tolerate it any longer. On the Governor's strong advice I have therefore told Ions and Kemble to come over here tonight if possible and to remain temporarily pending your decision on the questions raised in Hong Kong telegram under reference.
3.
Hong Kong Government are authorising their Permit Officer (whose wife is in Macao) to come here at the same time if he thinks fit.
