Macau and Hong Kong
The article on Macau and Hong Kong about which you asked in your letter (TS 7/1162/46 IV) of 31 JanuarY appeared in Za Rubozhom a few days previously.
2. I should explain that Za Rubezhom is a weekly review of the foreign press and devotes most of its space to trans- lations, sometimes accompanied by commentarice, of articles
The article in newspapers and magazines all over the world.
It you mention was taken from the Danish paper kolitiken. occupies a full page and considerable labour wo la be in- volved in translating it. In view of the origin of the article a translation would in any case scen pointless.

The headline (presumably chosen by Za Rubeahon not
The article is a Politiken) is "A colonial abccess". reiing descriptive piece presenting Macau as a pretty sordid, vice-ridden and neglected place which is of no economic value to Fortugal. The interest of the article from the Soviet point of view is that the author dwells on the fact that Macau, which harbours so many Chinese refugeed and were Communism is forbidden, exists on C.P.R. sufforcues. He suggests that Fortugal hangs on to the colony for general prestige reasons. But what on earth, he concludco, proky us China to do a deal with one of the most reactionary stutuc in Europe?
4. This sort of thing is of course ideal grist to the mill of Soviet anti-Chinese propaganda. A short com.entary by a member of Za Rubozhom's ataff at the end of the article drives the point home. I enclose a translation of thic.
5. Some of the same points were made about Macau in an article which appeared in Izvestia at the end of December. I enclose a translation. As you will see, this article, unlike that in Za Rubezhon, does not link Macau and Hong ard suggests that Macau itself is an important link with the Vest from China's point of view.
