On 30 August we asked the Governor of Hong Kong to

conduct a coaert probe of Chinese intentions regarding the

price they would exact for the release of Mr. Grey, the

Reuter's correspondent detained in Peking.. The probe has

not gone catirely to plan. There is now disagreement

between the Governor and H.M. Chargé d'Affaires in Peking

on how next to proceed.
