(a) Mr. Barrynaine

It now looks as though Mr. Barrymaine, a freelance

journalist, was in fact arrested off a ship in Shanghai last

week. We are still, however, trying to obtain confirmation

from the ship's master (now in Singapore) and through other

sources. Sir D. Hopson has asked the Chinese authorities to

elucidate the position.

(e) Exit visas for the British Mission in Feking

(r) Exit visas for British bankers in Shanghai

No progress,

11. I am informed by the Private Secretary that it is also the

Secretary of State's intention to have a meeting with the

Commonwealth Secretary about the wider problems of Hong Kong.
