release, we had struck some bargain with the Chinese, somehow

involving Hong Kong.

If he does see the press, Sir D. Hopson must clearly

draw attention to gur grave and continuing concern for British

subjects in detention in China, and refer to outstanding visas

for certain members of the Kission. But he should, I think

acknowledge that the Chinese, by granting his own visa, have

taken a step in the right direction; and he might do this by

saying that if his own exit visa means that movement of staff

will now return to normal, this should contribute to the

improvement of Sino-British relations generally.

Sir William Armstrong has now agreed that Sir D.

Hopson may give a televised interview on his arrival in this

country.

this.)
