Addressed to Peking telegram No. 150 of 4 April Repeated for information to: Commonwealth Office

Prison Visits,

At yesterday's meeting with N.C.N.A. agreement was reached on all outstanding differences. Subject to confirmation, visit will take place on the morning of 9 April.

2.

N.C.N.A. accepted our proposal for visits to a total of 17 prisoners (i.e. excluding the 2 newspaper boys and two prisoners who had been released since the last meeting) without haggling. They also promptly accepted 3 visitors (2 newspaper representatives plus 1 N.C.N.A.), describing this as "reasonable compromise'. They did not (repeat not) raise the question of the thoughts of Mao.

3.

N.C.N.A. were in markedly cooperative and genial mood, and had clearly been instructed to conclude the matter swiftly.

F.O. please pass Immediate Peking 150.

Sir D. Trench
