Our Chargé handed note by the Chinese Ministry of

Foreign Affairs demanding that all Chinese journalists

arrested in Hong Kong should be declared innocent and set

free, the ban on three communist newspapers lifted and

lawsuits against communist papers dropped. Demands had

to be met in 48 hours.

On expiry of ultimatum our Mission was attacked and

burnt down.7

In a note (rejected by our Chargé) Ministry of Foreign

Affairs restated Chinese demands made since 15 May.

Our Chargé informed by M.F.A. that root cause of

abnormal state of fino-British relations was the suppressed

Chinese citizens in Hong Kong and that until this stopped and British Government accepted Chinese Government's demands

and released all prisoners, there could be no improvement

or normalisation of relations.

Our Chargé informed by M.F.A. that if we wished

relations to improve we must first stop suppression of

Chinese in Hong Kong.

Kwangtung People's Committee for Supporting the Anti-

British and Anti-Atrocity Struggle of Hong Kong Compatriots:

(a) Stop their unreasonable persecution of the

patriotic Trade Unions, schools, offices

and studies of the patriotic compatriots

in Hong Kong;

(b) immediately release all those who have been

arrested and compensate the patriotic

/compatriots
