PRIORITY HONG KONG TO COMMONWEALTH OFFICE

Addressed to Commonwealth Ofrice telegram No. 128 of 29 January Repeated for information to Peking

ге

Peking telegram 74, paragraph 12.

We have examined the situation carefully and we do not think that there is any particular action imminent which is likely to cause an untoward incident (though we cannot of course guarantee that trouble may not arise out of actions by Communist militants, e.g. if they try to let off fire crackers in defiance of the law during the Chinese New Year holiday). A possible exception is that 29 January is the return date for a Writ for arrears or rates against the Hong Kong Advertising Company (which has C.P.G. affiliations) but this is very much a routine matter and many such summonses have been issued against non-Communist ratepayers.

2. You may like to know, with reference to paragraph 4 of my 262 telegram 92, that Director of Social Welfare proposes before

Chinese New Year to release from a remand home three boys (two of whom were convicted for offences connected with Confrontation). All were given indeterminate sentences with a maximum of six months, of which they have served four.

Foreign Office please pass Priority Feking as my telegram No. 40.
