My telegram No. 1115.

Canton and Wuhan Incidents.

Stories of continued troubles in Canton are still reaching us from travellers. Disorder in the town is said to be spreading; militants from outside the city seem anxious to join the fray and some have done so; the main railway station is virtually out of use and the train for Shum Chun has more than once left from a suburban station; traffic between Canton and Wuhan is alleged to have been completely stopped between 24 and 28 July.

2. At a meeting held in a village not far from Hong Kong on 28 July, militia speakers said that not only had the PLA in Wuhan rebelled against Mao, but some had also done so in Canton. Indeed, it was alleged that the Wuhan incident sparked off the trouble in Canton.

30 Train traffic to the frontier is still sporadic and the arrival of goods waggons very uneven.
