Your telegram No. 1047.

U.S. Naval Visits.

We feel that during the present phase of positive action against Communist leadership it would be unwise to give Peking any additional grounds for raising the temperature. Moreover visit of CONSTELLATION follows rather quickly upon visit of HANCOCK earlier this month.

2. Grateful therefore if you will explain position to U.S. authorities and say that we must ask them to cancel that particular visit. You could at same time convey agreement to all (repeat all) the other proposed U.S. visits mentioned, subject to the usual stipulation about last minute cancellation.

(Passed D.S.A.0. for Washington, Peking and P.A.

Singapore)
