My telegram No. 409.
Visit of U.S. Ships.
U.S. Naval Authorities have warned us that
clearance is likely to be asked for visit of nuclear powered
'BAINBRIDGE' from 19th to 24th May.

I understand that Ministry of Defence have already said that monitoring team could be made available.
3.
Visit of another nuclear vessel so shortly after the protest about 'ENTERPRISE' will certainly not pass unnoticed by Left Wing here and might conceivably occasion a further
chinese protest. On the other hand, relatively little fuss was made in the local Left Wing press about recent visits of
'BONHOMME RICHARD' and 'CANBERRA'
4.
In the circumstances, and subject to the comments of H.M. Embassy, Peking, I would propose to inform U.S. authorities that we would have no objection to the visit in principle but would have to review its advisability in the light of any political developments over period of 1st May or as a result of visit of 'TICONDEROGA' 4th to 9th May.
