Addressed to Peking telegram No. 93 of 9 March. Repeated for information to Commonwealth Office.
There was an incident yesterday morning involving the police, the driver of a van delivering goods to the Chung Shing Products store in North Point, and some employees of the store.
2. The driver was causing a traffic obstruction. Two policemen asked to see his licence. He produced this willingly but while the police were looking at it an employee of the store ran out and snatched the licence from them. They arrested the man whereupon a group of eight men came out of the store and jostled the policemen. When the police drew their truncheons the group ran back into the store and emerged with iron bars and cargo hooks. They forcibly took the arrested person away from the police and back into the store. Subsequently a police party raided the store and arrested five men who were identified as having taken part, including the original trouble-maker. He has been charged with obstructing the police, the other four men with assaulting the police. They have pleaded not guilty and were remanded in gaol custody.
Commonwealth Office please pass Peking 93.
