At the opening of the Supreme Court Assizes on 11 January, the Attorney General publicly announced that as from midnight on Sunday, 14 January there would be an amnesty lasting for two weeks until midnight on Sunday, 28 January.

Under this any person may report to the police or hand in to a police station any explosive substance or mechanism or any arms, ammunition, offensive weapon or firecrackers in his possession or control without being subject to prosecution, to an Order of Detention or to any legal proceedings at the instance of the Government in respect of his possession of them. The immunity thus granted would not, however, extend to any offences which may have been committed earlier by the use of the articles handed in.
