Mr. Christofas

The salary of the Governor of Hong Kong
was increased in 1966(?) in order to maintain
That
an adequate differential over that paid to the
next most highly paid officer.
differential has now been eroded by devaluation.
If Governors' salaries are to be expressed in
terms of local currencies and the Governor of
Hong Kong's salary is then expressed in terms
of the Hong Kong dollars it was worth pre-
devaluation (i.e. H.K. $144,000 a year
approximately), no further adjustment will be
necessary at the present time.
2. I cannot conceive that in the foreseeable
future we shall need to ask the Treasury for an
increase payable from U.K. funds in the case of
the Governor Hong Kong. There has never been
any difficulty in getting the Colony to pay an
appropriate level of emoluments for this office.
