Day: 1/Trench
CONFIDENTIAL
30th May, 1968.
I really am most apologetic that 1 have not written much sooner than this to thank you for the letter that you, Colonel Clague and Mr. C.Y. Kwan wrote to me on the 15th of April abo & the extension of Sir David's term of office of Governor. I was away in Fiji when the letter arrived, and instead of coming back to London I had to go on to the Bahamas; and from there I found myself diverted quite unexpectedly to Bermuda, Because of this 1 missed part of the talks with Sir David and John Cowperthwaite in London; and shortly there- after I had to go once more to Gibral tar, from where I have just retumed. I do however ask you and your colleagues to accept my very sincere apologies for the absence of any acknowledgment hitherto.
If may say so, I readily understand the confidence that you and your colleagues have expressed in Sir David and can assure you that your views have been brought to the attention of the Commonwealth Secretary personally, as you requested. Mr. Thomson has also seen the many petitions from various organisations in Hong Kong which have now reached us, also the press comment. I know that the Secretary of State is most grateful to you and your colleagues for having written in this matter, and I hope I shall be able to write again to you before too long.
2.
May I ask if you would be good enough to show this letter to Colonel Clague and Mr. C.Y. Kwan, as co-signatories of your letter?
With all best wishes.
