I have the honour to acknowledge receipt of the Acting Governor's despatch No.727 of 16 May, with which were enclosed a number of petitions seeking the extension of your term of office as Governor of Hong Kong.

I note the reply that has been sent to the petitioners and I should be grateful if you would inform those organisations and individuals who petitioned Her Majesty's Government and the Secretary of State, or who did not stipulate the recipient of their petition, that their views have been noted by the Secretary of State and will duly be taken into consideration.

3. A further despatch will be addressed to you on the subject of the reply to be sent to those organisations and individuals who petitioned her Majesty the queen.
