Four-fold expansion
by the Grand, Taipei
.C.C. YANG
PLACED among the top ten hotels of the world, the Grand in Taipei has torn down its old administrative build- ing the first part of the hotel to be opened in 1962 – and is to erect on its site a 12-storey, 450-room extension. The new structure will include a con- vention hall to seat 1,200, large Chinese and Western restaurants, a grill room, bar and small cinema.
At present the hotel has 120 guest rooms laid out in low pavilion-like structures in the traditional red column and upswept roof style of Peking's Forbidden City.
The new building, despite its 12-storey height, will preserve the deli- cate Chinese motif. It will retain the Chinese palace style with green tiles, red columns and a lavish use of Chinese marble. The structure will be 276 ft. long and 126 ft. wide. It is expected to cost more than US$5 mil- lion and should be completed by
March 1972.
