Road portion of the ground floor, first and second basements will be shopping space of 41,000 sq. ft., while the third basement will hold a grand restaurant capable of accommodating some 900 people.
Contracts have been awarded to John Lok and Partners for the sub- structure, and to Nippon Steel Cor- poration for the supply of structural steel. The hotel is expected to be in operation by the end of 1972.
Closer to the waterfront, a site at the junction of Salisbury Road and Nathan Road is being piled for a 17-storey luxury hotel being de- veloped by Crow Pope International (Far East Builder July 1970). Some 179,000 sq.ft. of shopping space is planned on five lower levels of the building with a 13-storey guest-room tower rising from a plaza deck. Archi- tects are Wong & Tung & Associates.
30 storeys
These, together with a 180-room extension to the Miramar Hotel in Nathan Road, also designed by Eric Cumine & Associates, are the largest of the projects being built. Of the hotels being planned, the largest is the pro- posed 30-storey complex of 1,000 rooms at Great George Street, Cause- way Bay. The site of 40,000 sq. ft. was bought earlier this year by Internation- al Hoteliers Ltd. Its development, estimated to cost HK$60 million, will include shopping facilities, night clubs and parking spaces for 800 cars.
Among more than a dozen other schemes on the drawing board are: a new multi-storey hotel at Repulse Bay for Hong Kong & Shanghai Hotels Ltd.; a 24-storey sister hotel to the Grand in Carnarvon Road, Kowloon, for Hang Lung Development Co. Ltd.; 200 rooms in Gloucester Road, HK and another 200 at Hung Hom for the Dynasty Hotel Group; a 270-room ex- tension to Asian House, Wanchai; 115 rooms at 5 to 9 Fleming Road, HK, 220 rooms at 32 to 34 Haiphong Road; two resort hotels at Mai Po and the 1821⁄2 milestone, Castle Peak Road; 285 rooms in Peking Road, Kowloon; and a 400-room structure at the junc- tion of Nathan Road and Dundas Street, Mongkok.
Added to these, property merchant Mr. Li Shiu-chung announced recently that he planned to redevelop property in Canton Road, Kowloon as a tourist- class hotel at a cost of HK$20 million.
It has been estimated that new Hong Kong hotels being built, planned or considered will provide a total of more than 8,500 rooms.
