Site
The new operating theatre block was erected on a limited area in the rear court yard of the existing main hospital building, It is the only site adjacent to the hospital which could be developed without seriously affect- ing the existing amenities.
The site subsoil was rocky in na- ture and in order to minimise the considerable noise arising from the removal of rock, the bottom of col- umn footings was raised to the high- est possible level.
Building
The height of the new block is kept to a level not higher than the existing hospital block in order not to affect to a great extent the light and air to the wards in the adjacent wings. The shape of the block is governed by the requirement of the operating theatre suites and each suite, forming a "cul- de-sac department. is so planned to have easy access to the wards it
serves.
The operating theatre suite is divided into steriled zone, clean zone. and dirty corridor so that the chances of cross infection are minimised.
The radiodiagnosis block was erected in the court yard in front of the hospital, supported on columns over the parking area and connected to the existing main hospital build- ing at first floor level. The five ma- jor X-Ray rooms are grouped as satel- lites around the central dark room and viewing room where both manual and automatic processing units are provided.

Temperature. humidity and air movement are designed to suit the conditions called for in each in- dividual section. 100 per cent of out- side fresh air is provided for the oper- ating theatres, at the rate of 15 com- plete air changes per hour. The air is drawn into the cabinet which hav- ing a pre-filter and a fine filter, is cap- able of removing 99.9% of the germ carrying dust particles down to five microns.
Electrical installation
For the normal supply two new 1,000 KVA transformers have been provided to cope with the demand for the whole hospital compound. An M.V. Board of 13 panels, manufac- tured by Wallace Town Engineering
