COMPRESSORS
Compact Diesel Units Feature Sealed Coolant Systems
FOUR models have been added to the Power Vane range of rotary air compressors, their main features be- ing small size and weight, compared with the models they replace, and sealed coolant systems with separate expansion tanks.
The Pixie 85-RO-1 is a new one-tool compressor, delivering 85 c.f.m.; Mo- del 160-RO-2 delivers 160 c.f.m. and replaces the existing Model 175-RO-2; and Models 210-RO-2 and 260-RO-2 are re-engined and redesigned ver- sions, superseding larger. four-wheel. 210- and 260- c.f.m. machines. These capacities are quoted for the rated working pressures of 100 p.s.i.
All four models embody the oil- cooled offset rotary-vane compressor. the smallest being a single-stage unit, the remainder comprising two stages. These are flexibly coupled to direct- injection diesels, with which they share a common cyclonic air-filter unit, having a shutter-type warning device to indicate when cleaning is needed. A common dual-core radia- tor handles both the compressor cool- ing oil and the ethylene-glycol engine coolant.
Forming the main chassis mem- bers are a tubular fuel tank and an air-receiver, the latter tested to 263

p.s.i. and with a working pressure of 150 p.s.i. An instrument panel car- ries all necessary working gauges and a tachometer and engine-hours meter are fitted to the engine. Other com- mon features include an automatic capacity control that regulates engine speed to the demand, and gives vari- able closure of the unloading intake valve, automatic service discharge valve, 12-v. starting, one-piece remov- able canopy for ease of maintenance, and accessible 34 in. air take-off cocks, of which there are two on the smaller models and four on the two larger.

ROAD ROLLER
Long Wheelbase Machine with Three Rollers
A TRIPLE roll road roller has been produced by Blaw Knox Ltd., Roches- ter, Kent, UK. Its long wheelbase and positively mounted centre roll en- sure good level control on the mat.
Although normal procedure is to set all three rolls in the same plane, the centre roll can be controlled hydraulically to 101.6 mm (4 in.) above grade, or 12.7 mm (1⁄2 in.) be- low grade and so, if required, the pressure exerted by the centre roll can be varied. The machine can be operated from either side, the seat, steering wheel and braking system be- ing mounted on a platform, which is moved on rollers to either side of the machine and locked in the appropri- ate position.
Both the rear and front rolls are driven and the transmission is through a twin disc torque convertor. Pri- mary transmission from the engine to the torque convertor is through a Multi-V belt drive, which allows the engine to be flexibly mounted, so re- ducing vibration to an absolute mini-
mum,
The engine is mounted transversely across the rear end of the frame and can be removed completely in a com- paratively short time.

GRADER
Conveyors Handle up to 300 cu. yd. per hour
A NEW rubber-tyred automatic fine grader, the Model 512-9, that trims sub-grade and base materials to a toler- ance of 8 in. is announced by R. A. Hanson Co. Inc., Palouse, Washing- ton, USA.
The machine carries a 9 ft. cutter. At half its rated speed it fine grades, 3,000 sq. yd. of sub-grade or com- pacted base per hour. Depth of cut can exceed 6 in.
High-speed 30 in, conveyors handle up to 300 cu. yd. per hr. and dis- charge to either side or to the rear. Compacted, treated base can be trim-

med at the same speed and base ma- terials can be spread in lifts to 6 in.
Grade and steering are controlled by Rahco electric sensors mounted on roll-out support arms which can be extended to 16 ft. They enable the Model 512-9 to cover 41 ft. of work from only one set of stringlines. After a centre pass, grade for other passes is controlled by using the stringline for outside reference. Steering is con- trolled automatically from the string- line.
The 512-9 is a four-wheel drive machine with articulated steering and a road speed of 9 m.p.h. forward and
reverse.
