Boller Plant
Steam for kitchens, sterilizers and heating for the buildings and for the hot water services is provided from two oil-fired boilers installed in the ground floor plant room. Each boiler is capable of providing 8,000 lb. of
per hour
the boilers and operate at a pressure of 110 p.s.i.g.
steam
The boilers are fully automatic in operation so that as the load demand for the buildings increases the boilers automatically modulate their firing rate by adjustment on the oil fuel iine.
Electric Supplies
In order to reduce the possibility of electrical supply failure, high ten- sion cables feed supplies into the site from two distribution networks. These cables feed two 750 KVA. transformers. The cables together with the transformers were installed by the China Light & Power Co. Ltd.
From the transformers, medium voltage supplies are provided through- out the hospital building and domes- tic quarters. A 250 KVA. diesel generator has been installed so that in the event of a complete mains failure certain essential electrical ser- vices can be maintained. Such ser- vices include lighting and power for operating theatres and also the air conditioning plants that serve these, emergency lighting, etc.
Piped systems of gases such as nitrous oxide, oxygen, etc. are piped throughout the hospital and in addi- tion vacuum and compressed air services are also provided with a pipe network. Gas cylinders and air com- pressors are housed at the ground floor plant room and automatic alarm systems are provided to indicate im- mediately should there be a failure in any of the systems.
Kitchens
The main kitchen for the hospital is provided at the top floor of the building and Chinese food is prepared in a separate kitchen situated at the ground floor. The kitchen equipment utilizes gas, electric and steam. Thus should any particular fuel system breakdown a certain amount of cook- ing could be maintained by using other fuels.
Mechanical extract ventilation systems are provided for the kitchens and hoods are installed above the cooking equipment so that heat and vapours can be collected at their source rather than allowing them to disperse in the kitchen.
Miscellaneous Services
All medical packs used in military clinics through out the Colony are prepared and sterilized in the hospital C.S.S.D. and therefore the sterilizing equipment capacity is greater than
one would normally associate with a hospital of this size.
Most articles are sterilized in three 6.5 cu. ft. high speed autoclaves in the C.S.S.D. on the fourth floor. A hoist conveys sterile items from there to the main theatres immediately above on the fifth floor. Additional autoclaves are provided in the main and casualty theatres to enable in- struments
used being
during an operation to be sterilized on the spot before being re-used.
Should it be necessary to sterilize bedding etc. a disinfector is installed for decontamination. Bed pans are sterilized with live steam in bed pan sterilizers on each ward floor. Other small sterilizers are provided in vari- ous specialist departments and the pathology laboratory for convenience.
Doctors on duty in the hospital are located by a paging system which is operated from the telephone room. A loop induction system on several hos- pital floors locates doctors on a special frequency pocket receiver which they carry with them at all times.
