NE might expect a house design- ed by an architect for himself to embody many modern ideas which his more conservative clients would be wary of adopting. Such seems to be the case with a new home at Chung Ham Kok, Hong Kong. designed and occupied by Mr. Jack- son Wong.
While it has a strong affinity with recent buildings in other parts of the world, it expresses a rare individuali- ty and is not obviously like any other building that comes to mind.
The most striking thing about the house is that the entire exterior and many parts of the interior are in ex- posed fairfaced concrete; no special surface treatment of any kind has been applied. The finish is of a high standard and the effect is clean and simple while avoiding the pitfalls of 'concrete blocks" with their common dreariness and austerity.
The overall design and massing of the building is the second thing which immediately catches the eye. The first or top floor is a flat box cantilevered one side well out from the two floors below it.
This cantilever is partly brought about by the nature of the site. The ground slopes down towards the south, and the architect wished to build on
