St. Stephen's from Bonham Road, the main entrance to the church
scheme overall is dark blue and gold, relieved by the warm brown of the teakwood furnishings and Burgandy carpeting in all the circulation areas.
The structure is of reinforced con- crete. Exterior walls are finished in grey Shanghai plaster and the glazing is in a variety of colours.
In the church interior, the colour
In keeping with the proposals of the church authorities. the altar is placed in the centre of the sanctuary
and the choir at the back of the church facing the congregation. Everyone may thus be a witness of the service and an atmosphere of worshipping together is created.
The sculptured figure of Christ on the Cross is suspended from the ceil- ing of the altar, and railings and seats of the santuary are designed as sim- ply as possible to avoid obstructing the line of sight in any direction.
The floor of the entrance hall is in crazy marble and the floor of the foyer is in Travertine.
A white marble ornamental foun- tain, placed in front of the coloured glass mosaic window, and the white marble baptismal font with black marble legs and base are of Italian handicraft.
Contractors
The total cost of the building, in- cluding piling, superstructure, air- conditioning, electrical installation, sound broadcasting system and all in- ternal furnishing, was approximately HK$1,800,000.
The general contractor was Siu Kin and Co., Ltd. Piling was done by Franki Piling and Engineering Co., Ltd.
