improve and complete in 1963, when Mr. Chien left the Colony for the United States.

Double Capacity

The old St. Stephen's Church on the same site was more than 75 years old and held about 350 people. It was planned that the new church should be built on the site of the old hall and the old vicar's quarters to give at least double this seating cap- acity. The old church could then be demolished to make way for a new secondary school,

Following a fund raising drive be- gun in 1959, the foundation stone of the new church was laid on Septem- ber 15, 1963, and a Thanksgiving Service was held on June 5, 1965 to commemorate the centenary of the church and the consecration of the new building.

With a floor area of about 7,649 sq. ft., the new St. Stephen's has a seating capacity of 800. Ancillary accommodation includes staff quarters and space for church members' ac- tivities.

an

Connection of the church to existing primary school and kinder- garten was an important part of the design, as pupils from the school use the facilities of the church, hall and a covered playground. The whole site covers an area of 25,730 sq. ft. and the church has a floor area of 7,649 sq. ft.

In this vicinity. Bonham Road is 36ft. higher than Pokfulam Road and the site was difficult one from both the planning and construction aspects. Because of this difference in levels, piling work had to be carried out in two operations. Underground ob- structions in the form of boulders had` to be removed before piling could begin and dilapidated buildings the other side of Pokfulam Road had
