Conventional spanners are used to bolt beams back-to-back

lateral triangles. Generally they have angles of 120 degrees.

Substructure

Because of the light overall weight, the substructure is simple and straight- forward. Three basic types of substruc- ture are possible: conventional oversite slab with the aluminium columns bolt- ed to the slab; concrete pads at nodal points used in conjunction with alumi-

nium floor beams; and strip forma- tions, also used in conjunction with aluminium floor beams.

Roof decking may be of aluminium or steel. Extruded expanded polysty- rene insulation suitable for foot traffic is laid on this, then a single layer p.v.c. sheet which is secured with mechanical fixings around the whole perimeter and dressed up behind the fascia. Finally the p.v.c. membrane is covered

with pebbles. Bituminous felt, asphalt or other forms of roof covering can also be used.

Solid external wall panels consist of timber framing, insulation material, vapour barrier and timber cladding. In- sulation material is expanded poly- styrene, approximately 50 mm thick, the vapour barrier is bituminised breather paper and the external clad- ding is hardwood or softwood stained with wood preservative. Glazed panels have aluminium or softwood frames.

Standard ceiling material includes asbestos wallboard panels faced with white decorative p.v.c. Preformed in equilateral triangles, four to the main grid, they are simply placed in position on the bottom flange of the roof beams. Alternatives are melamine, plywood or wood-veneer panels, sus- pended or conventional ceilings.

Plumbing, drainage, electrical, gas and other supply services are installed in the normal way. The hollow core of the Trelement column houses vertical drops for power, lighting and tele- phone points.

Although presently used for single- storey buildings only, two and three- storey dwellings are possible. In Ger- many an arrangement of stepped ter- raced units is being planned.
