The Hua-Mak sports complex was started in 1965 for the 1966 Asian Games. It already contains an indoor stadium to seat 20,000, a velodrome and a shooting range. The new main stadium will be the centrepiece of the complex, which will be completed with the addition of headquarters of- fices for the Sports Promotion Or-

ganization and athletes' dormitories at some future date.

It is intended that the stadium will have as wide use as possible, including light athletics, rallies, festivals and games such as soccer and rugby.

In the TAPE project the main means of distributing the spectators is by 6-metre wide ramps, which will also

be used by mini-trucks for cleaning and servicing. There are three upper levels beneath the seating, providing space for offices, conference rooms, television and radio facilities and jour- nalists' rooms. Spectators facilities in- clude a sports museum, restaurants, toilets, and lounge space.

The ground floor contains athletes' changing rooms, meeting rooms, medi- cal stations, warming-up area, per- formance preparation rooms, multi- purpose space and maintenance work- shops.

Covered parking for 300 vehicles of staff and athletes is provided and close by the stadium is open air parking for 5,000 cars, 100 bus parking spaces and 100 taxi stands.

The stadiums structural frame and seating will be of precast, reinforced concrete. More than 30 per cent. of the seats will be covered by a roof made of prestressed concrete canti- lever beams at 10-metre spacings, ten- sioned by independent steel cabies.

Tenders for the first stage of con- struction will be invited in the new year and it is expected that work will begin in April 1971. To be undertaken in three phases, the project is sche- duled to be completed in three years.
