Competition of Ideas for Town Centre in Finland
THE International Union of Architects has approved the conditions of an international competition of ideas for the town centre of Espoo, Finland. The competition is open to anyone, and is not restricted to architects or town planners. The total prize-money of 100,000 Finnish marks (about £11,000) will be divided between the first five competitors in proportions to be decided by the in- ternational jury. A further 20,000 Finnish marks (about £2,200) has been reserved for the purchase of entries.
The aim of the competition is to obtain ideas for a new administrative town centre to be built in the near future at Espoo, which will make it the most important administrative centre of the western metropolitan area of Helsinki, the capital of Finland.
Registration forms for the competition can be ob- tained from Martti I Jaatinen, Mannerhemintle 45 A 15, Helsinki 25, Finland. The competition documents, which are in English and Finnish, will be sent to competitors who register and who deposit a sum of 100 Finnish marks, half of which will be reimbursed to competitors who sub- mit entries. The deposit must be sent to the following bank: Espoon kauppalan assemakaavatoimisto, Espoo.
The closing date for registration is November 10, 1966, and the closing date for posting designs is June 10, 1967.
Swedes Design Lima Subways System
Two Swedish engineers, Erik Tengblad and Sigwid Rib- bing, formerly with the Stockholm Transport Company (SS), have designed the new subway system for Peru's capital, Lima. The first part of the project is expected to be completed in 1973 and the entire system should be ready for operation in 1985.
According to specifications, the old colonial Spanish section of Lima will be fully preserved with the new subway running underground in concrete tunnels. In other sections the trains will run in the middle of the wide avenues.
